A Calmer Evening Routine

The Night I Couldn’t Shut My Brain Off

“Frankincense teaches us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with what truly matters.”— Dr. David K. Hill

We always love when our friend Shelly shares here because she has such a practical, grounded way of talking about wellness. She’s a homeschool co-op teacher, wellness enthusiast, and someone who genuinely understands what everyday overwhelm can feel like. This week she’s sharing a simple nighttime routine that helped her slow down when her mind wouldn’t stop racing.

The Night I Couldn’t Shut My Brain Off

It was 2:17 a.m. and I was completely awake.

Not the peaceful kind of awake where you quietly read a book for a few minutes before drifting back to sleep. I mean the kind where your brain suddenly decides it’s the perfect time to replay old conversations, rethink tomorrow’s schedule, and question every unfinished task all at once.

If you’ve ever laid in bed mentally exhausted but unable to slow your thoughts down, you probably know exactly what I mean.

I tried all the usual things that night. Deep breathing. Getting a drink of water. Even scrolling my phone for a few minutes, which honestly only made things worse.

Then I reached for something I hadn’t tried yet that night: Frankincense essential oil.

How Frankincense Became Part of My Evening Routine

For a long time, I thought Frankincense was mostly used for quiet moments or spiritual practices.

But over time, it’s actually become one of the oils I reach for most often when I’m trying to slow down mentally and settle into the evening.

That night, I rubbed a drop between my hands, inhaled deeply, and applied a little to the back of my neck and the bottoms of my feet.

Within a few minutes, I noticed myself starting to relax physically. My thoughts didn’t magically disappear, but they stopped feeling quite so loud and fast.

That simple moment helped me finally settle down enough to rest.

The Simple Night Routine I Keep Coming Back To

Since then, Frankincense has become part of a very simple nighttime routine that helps me transition out of “busy mode” at the end of the day.

Here’s what I usually do:

  • Diffuse Frankincense about 30 minutes before bed

  • Apply a small amount to my feet or neck

  • Take a few slow breaths before turning out the lights

  • Try to stay off my phone before bed… still working on that one

It’s not complicated, but I’ve learned that simple routines tend to work best when they’re consistent.

And for me, consistency matters more than perfection.

DIY Relaxing Diffuser Blend

When my mind feels especially busy at night, this is one of my favorite diffuser blends to use before bed.

Ingredients

  • 3 drops Frankincense

  • 3 drops Lavender

  • 2 drops Cedarwood

  • 1 drop Wild Orange

Directions

Add to your diffuser about 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.

I love this blend because it creates a softer, calmer atmosphere in the whole room and helps signal to my brain that the day is winding down.

What I’ve Learned About Overthinking

I used to think I needed a perfectly calm schedule to feel settled emotionally.

Less stress.
More time.
Fewer responsibilities.

But what I’ve slowly realized is that small habits can make a bigger difference than I expected.

For me, grounding routines like diffusing Frankincense or taking a quiet moment before bed help create a little breathing room between me and the constant mental noise.

And sometimes that small pause changes the entire direction of the evening.

Why I Keep Reaching for Frankincense

One of the reasons I love Frankincense so much is because it helps me feel calmer without making me feel sluggish or disconnected.

When I use it consistently, I often notice that I feel:

  • more present

  • less mentally cluttered

  • emotionally steadier

  • better able to slow down at night

Not perfect.
Not completely stress-free.

Just more grounded than I was before.

And honestly, that’s often enough.

DIY Focus & Grounding Roller Blend

I also use Frankincense during the day, especially when life feels mentally busy or emotionally heavy.

Ingredients

  • 6 drops Frankincense

  • 4 drops Peppermint

  • 3 drops Rosemary

  • Fractionated coconut oil

  • 10 ml roller bottle

Directions

Fill the roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and apply to wrists, neck, or shoulders as needed.

I especially like this blend during long workdays or afternoons when my brain starts feeling overloaded.

Why Frankincense Has Stayed in My Routine

Frankincense is distilled from the resin of the Boswellia tree and has been used traditionally for centuries in wellness and aromatic practices.

What I personally love most about it is how versatile it feels.

Some days I use it to help create a calmer evening routine.
Other days I reach for it when I need to slow down mentally and regroup during a stressful afternoon.

Either way, it’s become one of those simple tools I consistently come back to.

Final Thoughts

That 2:17 a.m. moment used to feel frustrating and defeating.

Now it feels more like a reminder that I have small, supportive habits that help me slow down and reconnect with myself when life feels noisy.

If your mind tends to race at night, Frankincense might be a beautiful place to start building a calmer evening routine.

Not because it fixes everything overnight…

…but because sometimes the smallest routines help us feel a little more grounded in the middle of busy seasons.
