"The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment."
— Marie Kondo
There’s nothing worse than walking into a clean kitchen only to be greeted by a funky smell coming from the sink. Often, your garbage disposal is the culprit.
The good news? You can easily freshen it up using homemade garbage disposal pods made with natural, non-toxic ingredients. They’re easy to make, effective at neutralizing odors, and way better for your health (and plumbing!) than chemical alternatives.
Commercial garbage disposal cleaners often contain artificial fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals that get washed into our water systems. They may temporarily mask odors but don't usually address the root of the problem.
Homemade pods, on the other hand, clean and deodorize using natural ingredients like baking soda, citric acid, and essential oils.
Naturally deodorize with no synthetic fragrances
Help break down grime and food particles
Safe for septic systems
Quick, simple, and budget-friendly
Customizable with your favorite essential oils
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid
1 tablespoon castile soap (unscented or citrus-scented)
10 drops Lemon essential oil
10 drops Purify, Abode, or OnGuard blend
Water in a spray bottle (as needed)
In a bowl, mix the baking soda and citric acid.
Add castile soap and essential oils.
Lightly spritz the mixture with water while stirring until it holds together like damp sand.
Press mixture firmly into silicone molds or ice cube trays.
Let dry for 24 hours or until completely hard.
Store in an airtight jar.
To use: Drop one pod into your garbage disposal and run a small stream of cold water. Turn on the disposal for a few seconds to grind and freshen.
Baking Soda: Deodorizes and scrubs away residue
Citric Acid: Breaks down mineral buildup and adds fizz
Castile Soap: Gently cleans
Essential Oils: Add natural scent and antibacterial benefits
Lemon: Bright, fresh, and great for cutting grease
Purify: Targets odors and freshens the air
Abode: Powerhouse blend for surface and air freshness
OnGuard: Offers cleansing and immune-supporting properties
Wild Orange: The happiest oil that freshens and brightens up the whole kitchen
Oregano or Thyme: Potent antimicrobial power oils (use just 1–2 drops!)
Note: Avoid using citrus oils in plastic molds or containers as they can degrade plastics over time. Opt for silicone or stainless steel.
Using these pods once or twice a week can help maintain a clean, odor-free disposal. Combine this with regular cleaning and a few drops of essential oil for a sink that always smells fresh and clean.
This small habit can have a big impact on your kitchen vibe. Plus, it feels good knowing exactly what’s going down your drain!
